THE LEFT HAND

An active left-hand leads the crowd, playing together with the right hand that leads the rhythm, sets the harmonic options and both can just accompany the voice of a singer, or go with a community for celebrating rituals of communion, unity, peace and get us plenty of good energy.

THE MAGIC OF THE LEFT HAND

I remember a super concert of young-talented piano players that was happening in the top Theater of my city of origin, Quito (Teatro Sucre). It was focused only in playing the left hand in presence of Maestro Roberto Bravo, the Chilean Master, probably one of the top Latin American piano achievers of all times.

Later, I remember amusing myself by listening to Yuja Wang in Ravel’s: Piano Concerto for the left hand in D (here an excerpt):

In music, some pieces can be played only with one hand; in special, when you have a piano that stands alone and your right hand can rest as Wang’s in the excerpt.

IS IT DIFFERENT IN LIFE?

In life, it could be different. Still, in favor of the brilliant left hand, we should see what are we all doing while reading this article. Probably that is the hand that keeps your screen tight so your eyes can read and your right hand can scroll-up over the screen. Or if you are reading on a tablet or laptop, there is some structure of hardware supporting your reading, so your left hand can rest a little bit, while you push “down” for reading.

I really prefer the violin or the guitar, and the role that my left hand has when I play: The right accompanies the rhythm and presses the notes, but it is the left that goes really happy by jumping and creating the combinations of scales. The right hand is like a Hexagon, with six cords that play together but are always the same ones. It is the left that creates the ups and downs, and sometimes without moving high or low in the guitar, just changes positions and goes from one scale to another.

HARMONY

In life, it is not different.

An active left-hand leads the crowd, playing together with the right hand that leads the rhythm, sets the harmonic options and both can just accompany the voice of a singer, or go with a community for celebrating rituals of communion, unity, peace and get us plenty of good energy.

Probably we all can play our roles like a player goes when we have a guitar, regardless of how young or old we are. The young achievers will show they can do what they have to do, and for an old musician, the compass –they say- gets never lost.

Let´s play with the left. The right will learn. Let’s play with the right, the left will achieve.

Let’s sing together. Let’s use the opportunity of this Quarantine for learning to play and sing, all together, as a family, as a group, as a community, and make music, as always.
